In most of today's 'scouting,' the outcome is too much focused on being ready to play as if NBA teams don't develop guys themselves. I tried to point that out as well as I could. I am not familiar with the Chinese league, so this was a great case study to get more accustomed to the CBA brand of basketball as well!

Same thing in China, most commentators or fans assume a player should reign the CBA first, then.... What a fallacy. NBA draft is not like picking a guy to save the team or to lead the team to the playoff immediately. Actually, every candidate, no matter 1st pick or 2nd pick, is just a rookie, needs a continuous training / developing in the league.
Couldn't agree more. The real development starts at the moment these guys are in the NBA. But with millions of dollars involved, franchises want to know everything about a player, on and off court. Regarding their game, which role they fit etc. I try to point out the things an NBA decision-maker would point out and try to contextualize.
In Cui's case, there are areas to develop but his core qualities are at a level that can earn him a year, maybe two, to show that an NBA team can continue developing him. I ranked him at #60 on my Big Board 4.0 I released two days ago.
I also don't like the classic "jersey sales" argument, which is inevitable in regular draft coverage on Chinese players, unfortunately.
