My Passion for the NBA Draft
A quick story on why I started this newsletter, what's my motivation and what keeps me pushing to stay consistent in this labor of love. We all love the game, and this is my way of giving back:
Thank you for your Support!
I’m over a thousand subscribers—something I couldn’t have dreamed about when I started this newsletter three years ago. I want to give a special thanks to everyone who supports me financially through their subscription. Your contributions make it possible for me to maintain the costs of what’s solely a labor of love.
Of course, the eventual goal is to earn a living through basketball. Everyone dreams of the NBA, and I’m guilty of that as well. But the more time I spend covering the draft, the more fun I have. Consistency is key to growing in a niche. And let’s be honest, the NBA Draft is a pure niche which is irrelevant between July and February, when most folks start valuing the draft for the first time around March Madness.
My sole focus on the less-coveted prospects sets me apart from the competition. That’s my newsletter’s unique selling point. I don’t care much about the top players, because everything’s been said about them. Every season has someone ascending out of nowhere. My goal is to find these prospects way before they enter the league.
I don’t care about being right on a player. My goal is to assess a profile fairly and without an agenda. I’m focusing on drafting ‘roles’ rather than ‘players’. Every player has a certain role and must grow into another role. I watch the NBA actively to keep up and determine which roles are needed, and which are becoming scarce or a highly-wanted commodity. Combined with long-term potential, that’s how I determine the value of draft profiles.
The last time I checked, I wrote over 230 articles in three years, of which over 175 were written in the last two years. Some people give honest feedback and say they get too many notifications because I push content out every two or three days. That’s the main reason for subscribers canceling. However, I believe my consistency is why I have grown such a large following and group of loyal readers throughout the years.
I do detailed film analysis on every prospect I write about. That’s the base. But I will always continue doing it because it’s a labor of love and addictive at the same time. The number of connections with top agents and NBA front office personnel gave me much more confidence and made me ambitious to expand my game and myself a lot more in the gym. Therefore, next season I will be on the road and invest more of the scarce free time I have into basketball. My goal is to make this my profession.
